What we're for

The future of
urban motion.

People want to belong. To be first, to be an adopter, a trendsetter, a disrupter. That is what Eskuta was, and it is what Eskuta is setting out to be again.

Not a bicycle with a motor added

Everything we develop has the DNA of a motorcycle. We are not trying to build a lightweight bicycle full of gears and gizmos — we are building something robust, purposeful and practical, that happens to be legally a pedal cycle.

We know the jobs we do

Deliveries, care visits, parking enforcement, security patrols, facilities work and everyday urban movement. Not a category we are guessing at — the rounds our bikes already run, every day.

Products change. An idea lasts

“eBike” tells you the category we sell in. “The future of urban motion” tells you what we want to change: how people and goods move around a city, and what it costs them to do it.

A city is not short of vehicles. It is short of ones that are quick, cheap, legal to ride without a licence, and small enough to park anywhere. That gap is the whole reason the company exists.

Design

Why a moped shape?

There are two ways to arrive at an electric bike. One is to start with a bicycle and add a motor and a battery to it. The SX-250 was drawn the other way round — as a small motorcycle that happens, by design, to be legally a bicycle. That decision was made before the first part was specified, and everything else follows from it.

The law is short

The law it has to satisfy is short. A motor rated at no more than 250 watts, assistance that stops at 15.5 mph, and pedals that have to be turning for the motor to help. Meet those three and the vehicle is a pedal cycle: no licence, no road tax, no compulsory insurance, and every cycle lane and cycle path is open to you. Nothing in that list says anything about the shape.

The shape follows the equipment

So the shape follows the equipment instead. Mirrors, indicators and a hi/lo headlamp need somewhere to mount. Motorcycle-grade suspension needs travel. A cushioned seat you can ride on for an hour needs a frame beneath it, and 18-inch alloy wheels on tubeless road tyres need real forks. Hang all of that on a bicycle and you get a heavy bicycle. Design around it and you get a moped silhouette — a low step-through frame you can walk through in work clothes, under 55kg, with a lockable glove box and a keyless immobiliser, because that is what the parts wanted to be.

How it rides

What that gives you is a machine that rides like a small motorcycle and is treated by the law like a bicycle. You sit on it rather than over it. You signal rather than take a hand off the bars. You leave your helmet in the glove box and walk into the office. And you do all of it on a vehicle that costs about 17p off-peak to charge, needs no licence, no road tax and no compulsory insurance, and is welcome on every cycle lane in the country.

Manufacturing

We build them
in Nuneaton.

Getting around a city can be a pain. Commuting back and forth, waiting on public transport, missed buses, cancelled trains, traffic that isn't moving.

Two problems

As e-bikes emerged we saw two problems. The first was the law. An e-bike is only a pedal cycle while it stays inside the limits set for one, and not everything sold as an e-bike stays inside them — the rider is the one who finds out. The second was that the technology was an afterthought: motors slapped onto push bikes.

What we built

We built Eskuta with both in mind. The best legal e-bike we could make, and one you'd actually want to live with — no licence, no road tax and no compulsory insurance, durable enough for a delivery shift, comfortable enough for the ride home, and convenient enough to use every day rather than on dry Sundays.

Made and serviced here

So we build them here, in Nuneaton, and we service them here too.
